John 3:1-17

About the Artwork: Nicodemus (from the Jesus Mafa series)

The Nicodemus image from the Jesus Mafa series offers a poignant lens through which to encounter the Gospel story of John 3:1–17, read in today’s service. In this powerful, contextualized portrayal, Nicodemus appears not as a distant biblical figure but as a real person in conversation with Jesus—seeking understanding, wrestling with faith, and opening his heart to God’s transformative love.

In the Episcopal tradition, sacred art invites us into the story rather than merely illustrating it. Here, the gaze of Nicodemus reflects our own questions and longing for new life. Jesus’ words to him—and to us—of being “born from above” and loved beyond measure echo in every detail of this compelling work. As we reflect on this Gospel in worship, may this image deepen our engagement with God’s gracious invitation to transformation and abundant life.
